It is estimated that every year, $400 million or more of public money is filtered off overseas into the hands of ID thieves. This represents an extremely large amount being withdrawn from the economy on a regular basis, and whilst it certainly won't affect macroeconomic balances, the effect on households can be substantial.
In many cases, people who are the victims of ID theft do not find out about it until it is too late. By this time, these people have had their credit reports tarnished, their ability to gain credit destroyed, and potentially their livelihoods taken away from them.
For these reasons, the government needs to get involved to not only assist when ID theft strikes, but to ensure that citizens and consumers are taking the appropriate measures to prevent such things from happening to them.
How the Government is Helping?
Recently in America, new laws were passed which provide an additional level of support for people who are the victims of identity theft.
These laws include:
- Increased penalties and punishments for those caught participating in ID theft.
- Broader range of surveillance measures to detect ID theft.
- Law enforcement agencies given new tools and techniques to help intercept ID theft.
Additionally, when it comes to credit reporting agencies who are responsible for keeping your credit transactions up to date, new steps ensure that each entry is checked for its validity, to help prevent fraudulent entries from making their way on to credit reports.
Will These Changes Stop ID Theft?
Regardless of what the government does, ID theft is a phenomenon which is going to be around for a long time yet. As long as there is the Internet, and as long as there is a supply of consumer data, offenders will continue to milk consumers for any amount that they possibly can.
This is the unfortunate reality of the world in which we live. And what makes things worse is that there is very little that you can do to separate yourself from the potential of being tarnished by ID theft. Of course, preventative measures go a long way in helping - however even these are not foolproof.
So, instead of worrying about ID theft, do something about it. The government has - so you should too.
